Writing is made of bits and pieces

When you get overwhelmed by the task of writing, the vastness of language, the task of telling, it might help to think of it this way:

Words are building blocks, bits and pieces, materials to be handled, explored, taken apart like legos, played with, down to the smallest bits — some of which might well be memories of larger pieces. And that’s it. That’s everything.

—As a writer, you are making with language, building with it, shaping it, breaking it, opening it up as you work with it. Enjoy this without after-thought. Until a sort of living, organic structure starts to emerge that you can follow and gently help along — this is when the telling begins —
